MY First Techfest experience!

How it all started??

On the 30th & 31st of March, we had Sankalp Techfest in NIST Autonomous. It was a series of events filled with excitement, knowledge and fun.

We have many Clubs at NIST, all the clubs organized multiple events with exciting prizes and fun-filled experiences. I took part in 4 events:

  1. Ideathon 2.0

  2. Ad-Mad show by Management club

  3. Coding Crusade by Club Excel

  4. Idea Presentation by Cloud Computing Club

Ideathon 2.0:

The Ideathon 2.0 was a hackathon organized by NIST GDSC club, it is an effective way to learn and upskill by building projects based on our Current tech stack. Folks were participating from every major and branch, so I was also encouraged to participate.
I observed that out of 500 students in our batch of engineering, most of the students were familiar only with 50 students, i.e most of the students were having problems socializing even though having multiple groups in which they could communicate online.

I wanted to build something that would enable more folks to participate in conversations in general and express them freely. For that, I choose to make a real-time chat application called 'QUIVER' which would essentially be an exclusive website for students of NIST where they can communicate.

One of the important problems I managed to tackle was to encourage folks to take the first step in expressing themselves online. For this, I designed an enrollment system that would ask for your college roll no, after verification, it would automatically assign you a username by which you would be communicating in the session.
This idea was inspired by an app called Reddit, which keeps the identity of its users anonymous, which in turn helps people express their views.

Although My project didn't qualify for the next round, I did get to learn about many technologies like node.js, nodemon, CORS policy, CSS, Socket.io and many more.
It was an experience that I am grateful for as I got to learn and apply my knowledge to something that would make a difference.

AD-MAD SHOW :

I had an affinity for business and management since high school, I am always fascinated by the relationship of technology with providing solutions to real-world problems. While I did a crash course on the stock market in 2019, I learned about Nifty50 which is the collection of the top 50 companies in India.
The competition was divided into 3 rounds:

  1. Quiz: The first round consisted of a general aptitude test where we got questions related to business, English grammar and also some math. We as a team gave the test, the results came in and we were selected for round 2.

  2. AD Making: The second round consisted of making an advertisement from a sample of newspapers provided, this was a crucial round and I am grateful to my partner as she designed the advertisement immaculately. We prepared the presentation on Hyundai Ioniq 5Q which is a next-gen EV. We qualified for this round too and were promoted to 3rd round.

  3. Presentation: In this round, we had to present our idea to the judges which were senior management faculties. We presented our thoughts and kept 3 pillars by the line i.e safety, comfort, and assurance.

CODING CRUSADE:

In this event, we had to solve 4 problems on Hackerrank, the problems were basic and we could use any language we wanted to.

I achieved the solution for 3 problems and thus submitted the code.

Later I got shortlisted for the 2nd round. It was a treasure hunt-type game where we had to solve puzzles, riddles and coding problems to find the next clue.

I did qualify till the 2nd last clue, it was a great experience having to test my knowledge in competing
with others and to learn more

Idea Presentation by NIST CLOUD COMPUTING CLUB:

This was the most important event for me as I always had an affinity towards the cloud and with help of this event, I got a platform to showcase my knowledge.
I also got to interact with seniors like Sambit Eklabya, Sayeed Imran and V Roshan Kumar Patro.

I presented the idea of Cloud computing along with modern-day analogies. I also presented the relationship between AI, cloud computing and Agriculture. Merging the oldest profession and latest technology in mankind to build an automated agriculture and farming system.

I also got the opportunity to hear and know more about other projects that were presented in the competition. One of my favorites was the revolutionary banking system that was presented by my seniors.

Conclusion:

In those 2 days, I gained so much experience and it helped build a strong network for me I also enjoyed it a lot as we had artists like EPR IYER and DJ DEEP overwhelm us with their marvelous performances.

I participated in events that I loved, although I couldn't win a prize, I was more than happy to just compete, learn and make new connections with seniors and faculties which made the efforts worthwhile.

I have made a post about the Presentation that I gave.
